Just doing a quick mid week check in to see how everything is looking out here and sharing some behind the scenes thoughts on where we are with Sister Roots Farm and figuring out what consistency looks like for us!
Starting with the tester bed — we are finally seeing sunflowers germinate and we could not be more excited! We spotted a few coming up and it was such a good feeling to see after watching and waiting. The zinnias are coming up more and more with both rows showing activity and the cosmos are starting to emerge as well. The snapdragons are looking good out there too.
We also have our ranunculus which are absolutely beautiful. We are still thinking on whether that would be something we continue growing but they are stunning in the garden right now.
Now over to the tomatillos — this is our second time trying to grow them. The first time we had very little success so we are really excited to share that we are already seeing what looks like tomatillo blooms! We spotted three of them and we are just thrilled about that. The pepper plants nearby are looking good and we are still loving those snapdragons.
Our tomato seedlings are doing great too. We have tomatoes growing already on both plants and that is always an exciting sign. The strawberry plants seem really happy since we got the mulch down which is a relief.
Speaking of mulch — we are learning more and more about cover cropping and how it can actually serve as a natural mulch source in the garden. We came across a creator on YouTube called Bloom and Branch who does regenerative farming and she was speaking to cover cropping and how it is actually a healthier alternative. We saved ourselves a note to go back and do more research on it because from what we understand you want to use cover crops that are specific to your zone. Being in Zone 8A Alabama that is something we want to look into more. We want our garden to be sustainable, budget friendly and provide healthier options for our family and cover cropping seems to align with all of that.
Over in the pepper bed some of the transplants did well and some did not. That is just the reality of gardening sometimes. The cucumber bed is similar — one is doing okay and one did not transplant as well. We are keeping an eye on both. The bachelor buttons are still giving us some beautiful pops of blue but they will be coming out soon.
Now for a little behind the scenes. One thing we are still figuring out is what consistency with posting looks like for us. We wanted to do all the things and post on all the platforms but we are being realistic about what is actually sustainable. We are a wife, a mom, working full time and gardening for our family. That is a lot and we want to be authentic in how we show up.
What we know for sure is that we do not want to do the music reels and trending content because that is just not us. We are more introverted and what feels authentic to us is real garden videos, photos that highlight the beauty of what we are growing — the good, the bad and the not so good — and just sharing the learning as we grow journey. We also love Pinterest and that feels like a natural fit for the kind of content we enjoy creating.
So that is where we are. Still figuring it out but staying true to who we are in the process.
As always we are learning as we grow and that is truly the beauty of all of this.
